2026 Season at Starlight Theatre
AdventHealth Broadway Series
The 2026 Broadway season at Starlight Theatre features four productions — including two Tony Award winners and a Starlight-produced original — running from June through September. All Broadway performances begin at 8:00 p.m.
Hadestown — June 9–14
The Tony Award-winning Best Musical brings the ancient myth of Orpheus and Eurydice into a New Orleans-inspired underworld ruled by the industrialist Hades. Anaïs Mitchell's genre-defying folk opera is haunting, exhilarating, and utterly original. The 2026 Broadway headliner at Starlight Theatre.
A Beautiful Noise – The Neil Diamond Musical — July 7–12
The story of Neil Diamond's remarkable journey from Brooklyn songwriter to global music icon, told through his unforgettable catalog — "Sweet Caroline," "America," "Cracklin' Rosie," and more. A jukebox musical with real emotional depth.
Monty Python's Spamalot — August
The hilariously irreverent Tony Award-winning musical "lovingly ripped off" from Monty Python and the Holy Grail returns to the outdoor stage. Killer rabbits, French taunters, and the knights who say "Ni!" — all under the stars at Starlight.
Newsies (Starlight Production) — September
The season closes with a Starlight-produced staging of Disney's Newsies, the high-energy musical about the 1899 newsboy strike in New York City. Featuring a teen ensemble cast through Starlight's acclaimed community engagement programs, this production showcases the next generation of Kansas City talent on one of the biggest outdoor stages in the country.

History of Starlight Theatre
The story of Starlight Theatre begins with a queen. In 1925, Romania's Queen Marie visited Kansas City and attended a public music showcase organized by the Kansas City Federation of Music Clubs. The event raised $7,000, and the proceeds were placed in a city trust to fund what the Federation envisioned as a "theatre under the stars." Proposals for a location bounced around for years — the Kansas City Art Institute site, the area near UMKC — but none stuck. It wasn't until 1947 that voters approved a $500,000 bond to build an outdoor theater, and when Kansas City's 100th birthday approached, the project finally gained urgency.
Construction began on a cold December day in 1949 at Swope Park, with architect Edward Buehler Delk — the same man who designed the Country Club Plaza — leading the design. Nearly 150 workers labored for six months, and though the theater was still unfinished, it opened its doors anyway. From June 4 through July 10, 1950, the historical pageant "Thrills of a Century" dazzled audiences with airplane flyovers, covered wagons, gunfire, fireworks, and a real locomotive on stage — all in celebration of Kansas City's centennial. It was a spectacle worthy of the city's ambition. Construction was completed the following year at a total cost of $1.5 million, and on June 25, 1951, Starlight Theatre officially opened its first season with a performance of The Desert Song.
The decades that followed brought growth, celebrity, and reinvention. In 1958, Jerry Lewis — performing on opening night — personally funded a temporary stage extension to bring performers closer to the audience, a modification that foreshadowed permanent expansions in the 1980s. President Harry Truman, a frequent guest, once made a brief stage appearance during a 1960s production of Mr. President before being rushed to the hospital with appendicitis. By 1982, General Manager Bob Rohlf introduced contemporary concerts to the programming, bringing in artists like Bonnie Raitt, James Taylor, and Steve Miller and transforming Starlight into a dual-purpose venue. In 1983, a $1.5 million roof was added over the stage to allow performances in inclement weather. The biggest leap came in 2000 with the completion of the 10-story Jeannette and Jerome Cohen Community Stage House, one of the largest outdoor stages in the country, which finally enabled Starlight to host full-scale national Broadway touring productions. Today, the $40 million Uniquely KC Campaign — featuring a new seating canopy, upgraded stage infrastructure, and parking improvements — is ushering Starlight Theatre KC into its next chapter. Grab your Starlight Theatre tickets at GoTickets and be part of a tradition that's been going strong for over 75 years.
The Starlight Experience
Under the Stars
There's nothing quite like a night at Starlight Theatre. The 16-acre campus in Swope Park is framed by mature trees, picturesque fountains named in honor of the Helzberg and Steadman families, and the natural beauty of one of Kansas City's largest parks. The open-air seating means you're watching Broadway and concerts beneath the actual night sky — a setting that no indoor venue can replicate. Arrive early to stroll the grounds, grab food from on-site concessions, and soak in the atmosphere before the show.
What to Know Before You Go
Starlight Theatre KC is an outdoor venue, so dress for the weather. Summer evenings in Kansas City are warm and humid, but temperatures can dip after sunset — a light layer is smart for later in the season. No cans, bottles, coolers, or lawn furniture are permitted inside the seating area. Smoking is prohibited inside the arena. All patrons must have a ticket. The box office opens two hours prior to showtime at the East Pavilion. VIP seating is available for Live Nation concerts and includes reserved parking, early VIP entrance, and access to an exclusive VIP club with a cash bar and pre-show buffet.
Parking & Transportation
General parking at Starlight Theatre is free and available on a first-come, first-served basis. Premium paved parking is available for $30 per car and must be purchased in advance at the time of ticket purchase — premium parking guests enter Swope Park through the 63rd Street entry point. The venue is located at 4600 Starlight Road, across from the Kansas City Zoo, and is accessible from multiple entry points within Swope Park. Lots are shared with the Zoo, so arriving early is recommended, especially for weekend shows and high-demand concerts. Reserve your parking through GoTickets for guaranteed access.
