History of Starlight Theatre

The story of Starlight Theatre begins with a queen. In 1925, Romania's Queen Marie visited Kansas City and attended a public music showcase organized by the Kansas City Federation of Music Clubs. The event raised $7,000, and the proceeds were placed in a city trust to fund what the Federation envisioned as a "theatre under the stars." Proposals for a location bounced around for years — the Kansas City Art Institute site, the area near UMKC — but none stuck. It wasn't until 1947 that voters approved a $500,000 bond to build an outdoor theater, and when Kansas City's 100th birthday approached, the project finally gained urgency.

Construction began on a cold December day in 1949 at Swope Park, with architect Edward Buehler Delk — the same man who designed the Country Club Plaza — leading the design. Nearly 150 workers labored for six months, and though the theater was still unfinished, it opened its doors anyway.
